Time Out Market
The old Mercado da Ribeira got a modern makeover in 2014, turning a traditional fish and veg market into Lisbon's fanciest food court. The ground floor now hosts Lisbon's best restaurants in mini-format, while upstairs the original market still sells fresh produce every morning. This was actually Lisbon's main market hall since 1892, when they moved all the city's small markets here. The market bell, still hanging in the entrance, used to signal the start and end of trading each day. Look up and you'll see the original 1930s industrial architecture mixed with contemporary design. (Tip: avoid peak lunch hours if you want to find a seat, and check out the traditional market upstairs before 2pm to see local life in action.)
